Contouring
Octagon Barrels
Fluted Barrels
Muzzle Crowns

The majority of our contouring is done using state-of-the-art
cnc equipment to give you the exact profile that you are looking
for. Our cnc turning center was purchased brand new July 2007
and because it is new and well maintained, the tolerances we can
offer are unsurpassed in the industry. Combined with our machinist(s)
vast experience in programming we are able to duplicate just about
any contour that your imagination can come up with. And if you
are interested in multiple barrels with the same specifications,
our machine allows us to match them exactly.
Many barrel companies offer only one standard contour and anything
that isn't listed as their standard contour would cost the customer
an additional fee to program it. The funny thing is that once
the barrel contour has been programmed it is saved in memory for
use later down the road. But many companies continue to charge
a surcharge for any contour not listed in their "standards"
even though there is absolutely no further programming work required
to reproduce it. We have a different perspective on this. We know
that there are many customers who are used to certain contours
from other rifle barrel makers or from the firearms makers. We
have sat down as a company and made the decision to consider all
rifle barrel makers contours as our standards. This gives us a
huge variety of contours for the customer to choose from without
having to pay an upcharge fee. Only those contours that we do
not have programmed will be charged the $35.00 programming (special
contour) fee + the standard fee.
If there is a contour from a current rifle barrel maker or firearms
company that you don't see listed below, you'll need to provide
a barrel to duplicate to ensure that what you require is what
you get.
Many barrels that you purchase are in what most call a lathe-turned
finish. What is a lathe-turned finish? Basically it is the finish
that the companies cnc turning center (or whatever they are using)
leaves the finish at. It is unfinished in our opinion therefore
we send all barrels out in a polished finish unless otherwise
specified. We can also send it out with what we call a matte finish.
This is accomplished by bead blasting the barrel with very fine
glass beads. The advantage of a matte finish is the anti-glare
properties of it, but it also helps in cooling. How can this be?
Think about it this way, when you bead blast a rifle barrel you
are basically putting millions of tiny little dents into the barrel,
and with all these dents you have increased your surface area
(just like fluting).

Octagon
Barrels

We also offer Octagon barrels for your lever action, single shot
or bolt action rifles. Your octagon can be a tapered octagon,
1/2 round 1/2 octagon, straight octagon or a 2 step octagon. We
have also added Dodecagons to our line up (see image above). This
is a 12 sided barrel that gives you both an octagon and round
contour feel in the same barrel.
Octagon barrels vary quite a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer
in their dimensions.
When ordering an octagon or dodecagon barrel please submit as
detailed dimensions as possible. This includes overall length
including section for threading, what type of firearm it is going
on, measurement across the flats at the breech and muzzle ends,
length of octagon section if doing a 1/2 round 1/2 octagon, length
of wedding ring at the front of the receiver (if required), diameter
of round section at end of octagon and at muzzle end on 1/2 round
1/2 octagons.
Fluted Barrels

Fluting is another option for your round barrel. We offer either
6 or 8 flutes on our barrels as standard. 6 flutes are more typical
of what you would see on a factory rifle and allows us to make
the flutes a little wider than 8 flutes. Please keep in mind that
for safety we will only flute certain contour/caliber combinations.
Typically a #3 Regular Sporter type contour in a small caliber
is the minimum diameter we would go. There is a lot of questions
out there regarding fluting and what it actually does for you.
Here's a basic low-down on fluting. Fluting increases the surface
area on your rifle barrel which helps in the cooling. It only
removes ounces from the weight of your barrel, not pounds. A good
rule of thumb is that fluting your barrel will usually bring its
weight down to the next contour size. Fluting does not make your
barrel stiffer. This is a misconception out there. Here's an example:
A #4 contour that is not fluted will be stiffer than a #4 that
is fluted. A #4 that is fluted will be stiffer than a #3 contour
that is not.
Muzzle Crowns

Part of the finishing touches on your rifle barrel is its crown.
The crown is a very important part of the accuracy of your rifle.
A damaged crown can cause your accuracy to suffer. The crowns
above are the standard crowns that we offer. Crowning is an addition
to the contoured blank cost.
